Freestyle Focus Group @ Fortune Sound Club, Dec 14, 2010

Hey FFG Fans (yes, "fans" ... or maybe acolytes? ...) MC SNACKY NUTS and I will be freestyling at Fortune Sound Club this Tuesday. haha. I know -- we will be rapping over (arguably) the best (club) sound system in Vancouver. I say best (club sound system) because I would wager that underground systems like lighta sound or perception sound would destroy fortune's stacks. Nonetheless, this is a pretty interesting development for FFG. I mean, we are accustomed to rocking house parties or tag teaming on our custom SoundBike at parks in East Van. So, getting on the mic at a real live club makes me a tad nervy. But hey, we are pretty amped too. With Freestyle, I never know what to expect. Life is one huge flow from off the top of the head anyway. Below is the promo text for the event written by the one and only, Crystal Precious.
Maybe we shall see you there. It should be a memorable one.

Whattup Sasspackets!!!

SO. As you may or may not remember (and if you do remember, it’s blurry as hell), we generally do this thing once a year where we kick off our heels and take the night off to celebrate the holidaze in true Sweet Soul fashion: half-dressed and SERIOUSLY dipped in vodka-cranberry sauce. With sparkles on top. And tassles. Maybe a moustache or two. You know, depending how the night went. :)

This year we decided what the hell… if we don’t have a studio at the moment, we may as well set up the decks between two of the sickest stacks in the city and let a few of our awesome former DH residents FULLY take advantage of them. Cue dancing around in totally inappropriate holiday themed outfits and hugging each other suggestively. FAaaaaBulous.

We feel also that the best thing to do when a certain world-famous raccoon named LITTLE MISS RISK comes back from a 3 month tour is to throw her legendary ass back onto the stage so we can drool over it. Don’t you agree? Naturally. And of course, my traditional CP Mistletoe Fishing Rod will be back in action from which YOU CANNOT ESCAPE. Heh heh heh. NEVAH!!!

FFG Throws Down at SWEET SOUL's BLUE PARTY and EAST SIDE CULTURE CRAWL Crawl

The PROF and MC KARLIS @ Open Studios Nov 20, 2010. (Minus -5 C)

FFG has had a pretty charged couple of weekends. As you can see above, we were commissioned to freestyle outside the infamous blue party hosted at Open Studios. The Sweet Soul Girls created a wicked atmosphere of SASStacularity that night. MC Karlis (within 2 hrs of the event) fashioned a new more portable soundbike/soundsystem set-up that could loaded onto the back of his panner rack. It was working fine, until the the gell cells frosted over and the beats slowed till they froze. So, we upped our game and beatboxed the rest of the night. it was dope.

This past weekend, Transformation Projects (Andrea Curtis and I) produced an art/performance installation at the Russian Hall called : NOW TOWN CULTURE LOUNGE. We had a saturday afternoon a "Living Room Cypher". We got a lot of people up to rap that have never rapped before. that is part of the mission of FFG. We believe that EVERYONE can freestyle. And so we motivate new people to get on the mic alot. It is wicked to see people bust out lyrics and stories from their unique perspectives. Especially people who are not as heard from in public social forums. Pics from the cypher are forthcoming. For now, here are some pics from the last couple of weeks.

Images Below are some highlights from our weekly FreeStyle Focus Group Jam on Mondays at 45 WEST Studios. Featured Rappers include, MC Renanimals, Slippery Elm, MC HoneyPants, MC Single-Dain, Alistar, MC ISSAC and our youngest freestyler so far, MC Sophie (5 years old).

Freestyle Focus Group: Indoor Sessions Update

So, Mondays 930PM - Late, MC Karlis and I (Prof. Prawns) have been throwing down at 45 West Studios www.45west.ca on a huge sound system that dangles from the cieling. It runs off of an antiquated-yet virile reciever donated to the space for uses such as ours. We are running two mics and youtube through a main mixer that has many channels to spare. MC Karlis has integrated a usb-recorder that takes the main feed directly from the board. we will be posting some audio for the first time very soon.

here are some pics from the recent monday sessions -

recent missions

Unfortunately, we forgot the camera, but the last few missions have been awesome.

last weekend, we staked out the lakewood bike path by Tempelton highschool. a woman came out her house to speak to us and at first we thought, oh oh, were in trouble. but she came out to say that she could hear us down the block and she thought is was great. she brought her child out and her husband and they brought our wine wine and beers and took a seat on the globe-sculpture by the highschool smoke pit. others emerged from their sleepy burrows to come take things in. it was a chill night. then the police paid us a visit, and the lady dumped her wine-and glass in the bushes. the authority was civil, and we were on our way.
He drove up the bike path (sidewalk) all the way to us, rather than just walking a few yards...it was comical.

Last night, (friday 10th) sept. was epic. we started at Salsbury park, attracted 12 person walking posse that emerged from the appt block across the street. they heard us and walked directly toward us and then, after passing them the three mics, they slayed it. hilarious rhymes and gestures. quite accomplished. its nice to MC with other practiced folk, helps raise Karlis and my game. then a lady came out and explained that children are sleeping-yes , the poor children. so sad. they might actually hear some street culture for 20 minutes--but they must be protected. But that said, we are mobile, so we cranked the beats and sped off down the street to woodland park a few blocks down. threw down there, and we approached by the people who live in the Parks and Rec House. We continued on to Benny's Bagels driveway. we were hitting our stride there, rapping to the captive audience on smoke breaks during jamming at the jamspace located across the street (adanac-clark). Eventually the police found us, they had apparently received noise complaints from all the locations we were rapping all along Adanac :) they were very into the soundbike and asked why we did it...I broke into an energetic freestyle about the bike and this situation and the police were definitely into it.

we asked about noise by-laws and how we hate the sound of weedwackers and lawnmowers. but he said that no mater how loud they are, those are allowed, music, tho is pretty much never allowed. there can be sound complaints in the middle of teh day and they have to respond to those. there is no actual time span where you can make musical-artful noise (only construction-and yard maintenance, or engine noise). Does this seem just a little wrong to anyone?

The East Van Sound Bike - Freestyle Machine First Run

Its complete.

I need to get the full technical specs soon. but for now, understand that it is

1 Full Mixer (the very old one donated by Woodhead) used at 121 Heatley Studios
2 custom jel pack batteries
1 rental bass-high combo speaker
2 mics!! (with potential for 4 mics)
Bike trailer
Bike Kickstand
flashy LED's for specular effectations

We rolled to Victoria Park for our first outdoor jam. on the way we blasted Cypress Hill and KRS ONE--everyone we passed on bikes gave us BIG UPS!!!

At the park we jammed for an hour or so. we were on the mics rocking the playground. there were was an interesting assortment of people there. in one of the pics there is a guy in a grey hoodie and red flip flops. he stepped up to the mic and drunkenly threw down some okay lyrics. also, one of the kids pictured contributed a beat to rhyme over (from his iphone).

I am not pictured in these. we need a camera crew.
Also, recordings are on the horizon. will post here asap.

BC Arts Council Compromised By BC Premier's "Legacy Program."

I am reprinting this Press Release in its entirety to raise awareness of the temporarily partisan-izing of The BC Arts Funding Environment.

www.paarc.ca

18 August 2010 - For Immediate Release

In recent months, the B.C. Arts Council has been subjected to an
unprecedented amount of political interference, something former Arts
Council chair Jane Danzo called attention to in her letter of resignation,
made public yesterday evening. This political interference, taking the form
of a direct assault on the arms-length nature of the council, should be of
concern to all British Columbians. The B.C. government has
disproportionately cut funding that used to support cultural activity and
services in our communities (overall, by 50% to 70%), and now seeks to
replace that money with politically-directed money from a Legacy Program.
Not only will no money will be saved by this action, the democratic nature
of cultural expression will be significantly impaired.

It is widely suspected in our community that this interference is an
attempt by government to convert the arts and culture in B.C. into a tool
to be mobilized for partisan political ends, rather than an essential
outgrowth of, and benefit to, our communities. Furthermore, it is believed
by some that this attempt to manage culture directly by political fiat
originates in the office of the Premier.

It is incumbent upon the Premier and the government caucus to refute this
theory, not by mere denial, but by demonstrating a strong commitment to
arts funding at arms-length from political operatives, and by reversing the
disastrous, reckless and wasteful decisions identified in Ms. Danzo's letter.

President, Pacific Association of Artist-Run Centres

A copy of Ms. Danzo's resignation letter can be found here:

"Giving cultural agencies operational autonomy to implement the major
portion of Canadian cultural policy in the arts sector is an important part
of government policy. The arm̢۪s length principle is one of Canada̢۪s
cultural traditions; it lies at the very heart of artistic freedom and
freedom of expression."

keeping tabs on the locals

EMOTIONZ

Here is a local MC that I have never seen play live here in vancity, but I think some of his work, especially this
track. is wicked-awesome.

I am not a fan of all of his output, but thats not a knock on his abilities. In fact,
I like that I do not like everything. He takes bigger risks than most (with flow, content, style, production).

He is also responsible for the best
vancity themed rap. I have seen in a while.

Press Release

For Immediate Release
ATTN: COOL PEOPLE

Professor Prawns aka MC ASS (A.drian S.cott S.inclair), and Professor Karlis aka MC K-OK and MC CEDAR (d. Woodhead) have discovered over 3.5 Billion Instrumental tracks on YouTube.

Since this discovery, our cohort in saunasessions(.ca) crew have learned during in-depth weekly research sessions that if these tracks are awakened from their dormant state with improvised rap songs they tend to illicit cognitive and bodily euphorias. To date, our studies have isolated the following 7 themes which most frequently exhibit the aforementioned effects:

bicycling through east van
24 hour restaurants
sweating in the sauna
endemic plant species
muesli recipes
location of morel mushrooms
how to hit on people you find attractive

You are invited to take part in the ongoing research by bringing your freestyles to the lab at 2243 ferndale street. your unique, vocal improvisations (whether sung or spoken), will be added to the aggregate research results currently being compiled.

We are in search of thematic isolates. While we have discovered 7, we anticipate in excess of 10,000 themes ranging in euphoric effects from "Transgressive Ebullience" to "Demure City Boy-Love."

Laboratory Set Up:

1 Sony CARDIOID Microphone
1 Shure Microphone
1 Squire SP-10 Amp
1 Marshall MD 50 DFX
4 Virgen de Chiquinquira (weird Virgin Mary candles)
